HISTORY OF RACE WINNERS & CHAMPIONS:

The title of "USA Cycling Professional Criterium Championship" is awarded to the first U.S. citizen who completes the race. Because of this rule, it is possible that the overall race winner would not be the USA Cycling Professional Criterium Champion. This has happened several times. For example, in 1998 Julian Dean (Mercury) of New Zealand won the race. However, American Chann McRae finished in second place and, as the first U.S. citizen to cross the finish line, was awarded the title of USA Cycling Professional Criterium Champion.
